We are in Visby! One of the best perserved medieval cities in Scandinavia. Located on the Island of Gotland; it’s (only) about a four hour ferry ride from the mainland of Sweden in the Baltic Sea. Sometimes referred to as “city of roses” or “city of ruins”, Visby, is known for its rich medieval history as well as amazing culture and food. Check out the list below for our five favorite places to drink and dine in this beautiful Viking town.
Vinäger
Warm and bright ambience, that gives you those summers-days-in-south of Europe- feels. Vinäger’s menu is inspired by the Balearic Islands, and the kitchen uses only local produce as well as certified seafood, so you will experience a tasty as well as sustainable meal. For me, the cocktails and ambience were the highlight. I would recommend going to Vinäger as the first thing you do in Visby to start off your vacation on a good note with a thirst quenching drink.
Ett rum för resande cafe
Saffron pancake or Gotlandspannkaka is one of the provincial dishes on the island of Gotland. It’s one of the reasons why I have wanted to visit this island in the first place. It may be called a pancake but it is actually a more similar texture to a saffron flavored rice pudding with hints of almonds. Served with whipped cream and Gotlands famous salmbär (blue raspberries) jam. Our favorite spot to get this delicious treat? Ett Rum För Resande Café.
Bakfickan
For the seafood lover who wants to taste classical Scandinavian flavors, Bakfickan is a must. Their recommended fish soup with aioli is spot on, and their fried herring (a traditional Swedish dish) with spring onion butter and mashed potatoes is one of the best ones I have ever had. Side note* If you are a beer lover they have a great selection.
Gute Glass (Ice Cream)
Can’t decide which flavors of ice cream to get? Go with a flight of ice cream and enjoy a whole set of 10 flavors at Gute Glass. Gute Glass uses only organic Swedish products and natural flavoring, so when you get a spoonful of blackberry ice cream it tastes like a bowl of fresh berries. Tip; make sure to try their local flavors like saffron and salmbär.
Tuppens Krog
If you want to get away a bit from the festive atmosphere on the main square, grab your dinner at Tuppens Krog. Intimate, rustic, and very romantic for date night, with a small but excellent menu.
